Natural Translations
I use plants, clay, and extreme heat to portray destruction in search of beauty as well as the beauty of destruction. The results speak to my fascination with the dominion nature wields over our planet and the chaos that ensues as we try to tame it.Gallery
Sculpture
For my current body of work I use “plant matter”—porcelain casts of buds, twigs, seed heads, and nests, collected from my own backyard or walks along the highline canal, to build sculptures that speak to the complicated relationship between humans and nature.
I use porcelain and paper clay to construct these sculptures. Each piece is fired several times.
Installation
My installation work is usually site and project specific, a response to a call for art or a specific request to address a concept or space.
I use various materials, depending on the need, including ceramic, welded steel, bronze, wood, and plant-based resin.
Early Work
Much of my earlier work focused on the female form. Women often have unrealistic ideas about beauty thrust upon them, with long term psychological consequences if they do not measure up. I never liked the Twiggy archetype but, instead, preferred the Rubenesque body type. Both my female forms and my large sculptural vessels reflect this preference.
For this work, I used a sculpture clay body.
